Welcome from the Director

To that end, I am pleased to serve as the school Director for the Thalun International School, here in the heart of Yangon, Myanmar. Here at Thalun, we have a special community that knows “it is not what you have, but what you do with what you have that makes all the difference.”
Well, indeed, we have a great community, one that is not like any I have seen in my 30 years in an International School setting. As a Director, I have served in schools from Venezuela, to Monrovia, (Liberia, West Africa,) Guatemala and Burkina Faso. However, here our community at Thalun is indeed the heart of our school.
As we gear up for the upcoming school year, I am pleased to be joined here at Thalun International School by my wife, Ms. Hassia Trudeau, an Upper School Math and Science teacher, and our daughter, Saleena, who will be in the Elementary Division.
Here, we are committed to give the same energy, excitement, and dedication that is needed to support Thalun International School on its ongoing journey of going from “Good to Great!”

Teaching and Learning Approaches
Our goal is to provide students with balanced, developmentally appropriate learning experiences that promote collaborative practices, critical thinking, creativity and develop global awareness. The school programme combines core academic areas such as English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies with Music, Digital Technology, Art, Physical Education, Drama, Video Production.
The language of instruction is English for all classes apart from our Myanmar language program. Students experience the beauty and historical significance of Myanmar through field trips and cultural studies at each grade level. We believe that the learning of all students will be enriched through the host culture.
Approaches to teaching are based on best practices around the world and encourage inquiry and critical thinking. Teachers carefully assess each students’ development on an ongoing basis and provide an instructional experience that equips them with the skills, values and knowledge needed to be successful in academics as well as life.
As with most international schools, students will attend three levels of schooling prior to graduation from high school:
Nursery to Pre-Kindergarten
Ages 12 months to 5 years old
Elementary School
Kindergarten to Grade 5, Ages 5 – 11
Middle School
Grades 6 to 8, Ages 11 -14
High School
Grades 9 to 12, Ages 14 – 18
Curriculum Framework:
Our curriculum framework is standards-based, and is organized into units which build progressively on one another. The decision to follow the AERO (American Education Reaches Out) standards framework was based on the fact that while AERO is founded in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), it also recognizes that our students are international, and reflects that cultural diversity in its content.
